According to New Zealand news reports, an iceberg was spotted from shore yesterday for the first time in 75 years. Some of the giant blocks of Antarctic ice were visible from Dunedin on the South Island, but all have recently moved away being driven by wind and current.
The 100 plus 'bergs' in New Zealand waters have become tourist attractions prompting entrepreneurs to market helicopter and airplane flights. The trips take passengers close to the beautiful blue and white ice ... some even landing on the huge floating islands.
Although icebergs have been spotted in the waters surrounding New Zealand before, this years icebergs are further north than in previous years. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research indicated that a series of southern storms probably pushed icebergs north her than usual; scientists have been reluctant to blame global warming.
We are going to Australia and New Zealand next year and I need to know whether its a good idea and/or necessary to exchange US dollars for Australian dollars and New Zealand dollars? Will I need Aussie dollars for the taxi cab from the airport to the hotel; for shopping for souvenirs from a market, or small store; for tipping; and for things we may buy from a street vendor?? Then if I buy Aussie dollars will they be any good (accepted) in New Zealand for the same type activities (i.e. taxi, small purchases) or will I need some of both currencies ?? You would need to exchange your US dollars for Australian or New Zealand dollars You can do this at the airport once you have arrived.Because yes, you would need the relevant currency for taxis and day to day expenses. No, they will not accept Australian dollars for payment in NZ.You can use a credit card - Visa, or Mastercard are probably best. Most but not all places take American Express or Diners. Tipping is not usual in Australia or New Zealand. People do it in restaurants sometimes but it is not expected like it is in the US.They are paid a proper wage, so it is for service above and beyond what you would expect. I suggest just taking out smaller amounts of money from a money machine regularly so you are not left with too much to change back into the next currency you will need.We have plenty of EFTPOS machines and if you purchase at a supermarket you can often get extra cash out. hi all..i'm going to NZ(southern island)for a 15 day trip and i wonder if anyone can let me know roughly how much i'm expect to spend with accommodation...i know this is a silly question, because it depends on what kind of accommodation etc..but i was thinking New Zealand Budget Accommodation kind of style...not backpackers dorms neither 5star hotel(the last one only because of the lack of money hehe)..i'll be arriving in chc and then travelling down to queenstown, dunedin, milford sound,up to abel national park ,nelson lakes nat.park and also the glaciers...and i wouldn't mind stopping at hanmer springs for a day or two..hehe..any help is appreciated..thanks
I'm trying to remember how much it cost me, but I would say, depending on the time of year you would be looking at around 60-100 NZ$ per night. Some places are more expensive than others obviously and depending on the time of year. Some places you are visiting are small eg Nelson lakes, Glaciers ( either Franz or Fox) "so there is limited accommodation. I worked in Franz Josef for a while and in summer its booked out a lot..... I would try some websites to see whats what....try wotif.com or there are some backpackers that have "nicer"rooms, so that maybe worth looking at....there are networks kind of like YHA, but its BBH ( I do some cleaning in one near Blenheim and they have a range of accommodation available) so it maybe worth a look there.
